What to Wear to a Destination Wedding as a Guest

A destination wedding comes with a specific challenge: you need to look considered and dressed-up, but you're also packing light, navigating heat, and potentially wearing the same outfit from the transfer to the evening reception. That rules out most formal occasion dressing straight away.

The good news is that the best destination wedding outfits aren't complicated. They're just chosen carefully.

Match the fabric to the climate

This matters more than anything else. In warm destinations — the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Caribbean — heavy fabrics will make you miserable before the ceremony is over. Silk and fine cotton are the most practical choices: lightweight, breathable, and they look right in the heat rather than out of place.

Silk kaftans work particularly well for beach or garden ceremonies. They photograph beautifully, travel without creasing, and read as dressed-up without being overdressed. A linen kaftan covers the same ground at a slightly more relaxed register.

For cooler European settings — Tuscany in late September, Portugal in October — you have more options. A silk dress with a velvet jacket gives you warmth for the evening and looks genuinely occasion-appropriate rather than resortwear.

Check the dress code before you pack

Destination weddings usually specify one of three things: beach formal, cocktail, or smart casual. Each means something different.

Beach formal still expects a proper occasion outfit — just one that makes sense outdoors on a warm day. A maxi length is usually safer than knee-length. Cocktail gives you more room; a midi dress or an embellished kaftan at the right length both work. Smart casual is the most flexible, but it's easy to under-dress — lean towards structured fabrics and avoid anything you'd actually wear to the beach.

When in doubt, overshoot slightly. A destination wedding is still a wedding.

Pack pieces that work across more than one occasion

Most destination weddings involve more than one event — a welcome dinner, the ceremony, a morning-after brunch. Packing a separate outfit for each is impractical.

The most useful approach is to build around one or two hero pieces and change how you wear them. A silk kaftan worn belted with heels for the ceremony can be unwound for dinner. A velvet jacket adds formality to a dress for the evening and warmth on the flight home. The pieces that travel best are the ones that aren't occasion-locked.

Where Brits actually go

Most UK destination weddings happen in a fairly predictable set of places: Greece (Santorini, Corfu, Mykonos), Italy (Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily), Spain (Ibiza, Mallorca), Portugal (the Algarve, Douro Valley), and Croatia (Dubrovnik, Hvar). A smaller number go further — Barbados, St Lucia, the Maldives, Bali, the Seychelles.

This matters for dressing because the settings are quite different. Greek island weddings tend to be outdoors, whitewashed, and intensely bright — bold colour and print work well here, and you'll want something that looks intentional in direct sunlight. Our Mykonos Silk Kaftan and Seychelles Silk Kaftan are designed precisely for this kind of setting.

Tuscany in late summer can be warm in the day and cool by 10pm — a silk kaftan or dress with a light jacket covers both. The Amalfi Silk Kaftan works well here, as does a St Kitts Silk Dress with one of our velvet jackets for the evening.

Barbados or the Seychelles calls for the lightest fabrics you own; anything structured will feel wrong by midday. The Corfu Linen Kaftan and Mustique Silk Kaftan are both strong choices for long-haul tropical settings.

Colour and print

Destination weddings are one of the few occasions where bold colour is not only acceptable but expected. The setting usually calls for it — a muted taupe dress that would look elegant at a country house wedding can disappear entirely against a Greek coastline or a Tuscan hillside.

Prints work well, particularly at beach or garden ceremonies. The key is scale — larger prints tend to photograph better outdoors than small, busy patterns. Avoid white and ivory entirely (standard wedding guest rule), and be cautious with blush and pale champagne, which can read as white in strong sunlight.

Rich jewel tones — fuchsia, teal, cobalt, coral — are strong choices for Mediterranean settings. If you prefer something softer, a shaded or ombré piece gives visual interest without committing to a single block of colour. Our Mustique Silk Kaftans come in exactly this style — shaded aqua, shaded fuchsia, shaded coral — and are among our most popular pieces for weddings abroad.

A final note on practicality

Whatever you choose, check that it can be hand-washed or, at minimum, doesn't require dry cleaning. You're unlikely to have access to dry cleaning facilities at a Cretan villa or a Bali resort. Silk and fine cotton both wash well and dry quickly. That alone is worth considering when you're deciding between two otherwise equal outfits.
